Marian Murphy Powell is an accomplished singer, theatrical artist, educator, and mentor who has dedicated more than three decades to teaching and inspiring young artists at New England Music Camp. An alumna of NEMC, Marian has been a beloved member of the faculty for over 30 years and has served as the camp’s Recruitment Coordinator for the past seven years. Her long-standing connection to NEMC reflects her deep belief in the transformative power of music, mentorship, and community.

A veteran of national Broadway tours and regional theatre, Marian’s favorite roles include Cosette in Les Misérables, Christine in The Phantom of the Opera, Mother in Bright Lights, Big City, Marian in The Music Man, Fleur in the world premiere of Esmeralda, Mary Jane Wilkes in Big River, and Fiona in Brigadoon. Most recently, she performed the role of Miss Foley to critical acclaim in the world premiere of Something Wicked This Way Comes.

Marian has appeared as a featured vocalist with orchestras around the world, including the Shanghai Symphony and the Concordia Orchestra at Lincoln Center in New York. She has released three solo recordings: This Must Be Love; Live at the Saturday Club, a jazz recording with renowned pianist Bill Schmearer; and Amazed By You, featuring music written by pianist and composer Matthew Quayle. She can also be heard as a guest artist on Gail Levinsky’s Tipping Point.

In addition to her work at NEMC, Marian ran her own private voice studio for over twenty-five years, was an adjunct vocal instructor at The Hill School, The George School, Rutgers Mason Gross Extension Division, and continues to be a freelance artist in the greater Philadelphia area. She holds a Bachelor’s degree and Performer’s Certificate of Merit from the School of Music at the State University of New York at Fredonia and she earned her Actor’s Equity Association membership through the Tennessee Repertory Theatre’s Young Artist Program.

For Marian, NEMC represents much more than a place to teach. It is a community that has been an important part of her life for decades. Having experienced the camp first as a camper and then as a teacher, she takes great pride in helping each new generation of young musicians discover their artistic voices, build lasting friendships, and experience the sense of belonging that makes NEMC so special.
